IT GCSE - Controlled assignment brief (music festival)

During this assessment week pupil will complete part of their controlled assessment. In preparation pupils should gather resources for their website and animation which will be created in class.

IT Cam Nationals - database

Pupils need to understand what databases are why/how they are used to store information. They should be able to explain the following keywords:

  • Record
  • Primary key
  • Fields
  • Queries
  • Report
  • Relational database (e.g. one to many).

Drama - Unit 2 exploring a text

What should you revise?

You need to revise how to take a piece of theatre from the page to the stage!

You need to know what the outstanding criteria is for the Edexcel GCSE and you need to know as many strategies as possible to make your work original and creative.

How should you revise?

You should visit BBC Bitesize and look at the following sections:

  • The drama medium
  • The elements of drama
  • Drama texts and play texts.

You should also attend the Unit 2 afterschool revision workshop (dates to be given by your teacher). Make sure you read through the Unit 2 revision booklet that your teacher will give to you.

Important – This is a real GCSE exam not a mock! It is worth 30% of your overall exam!


What you should revise*

  • Rhythm and Metre (rhythmic notation, dotted rhythms, syncopation, off/on beat, polyrhythm, drum fills, time signatures including regular, irregular and free)
  • Texture and Melody (conjunct/disjunct, imitative, sequences, ornamentation, articulation, unison texture, monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, melody with accompaniment, layered texture)
  • Timbre and Dynamics (instruments including from around the world, dynamics PP-FF, crescendo and diminuendo)
  • Structure and form (call and response, ternary, binary, rondo, verse chorus structure, strophic, cadenza, minuet and trio, theme and variation)
  • Harmony and Tonality (major/minor/blues/raga, cadences, treble and bass clef notation, key signatures)

Sociology - media

History - controlled assessment and source handling task: Submarine warfare in both World Wars

What should you revise?

  • How German submarine warfare impacted on Britain in the First and Second World Wars.
  • The initial threat posed by the U-boats and the reasons why they were so effective in each conflict.
  • The strategies and technologies developed by Britain in order to counter and defeat the U-boat threat.

How should you revise?

You have been provided with a thorough revision guide containing all of the necessary content. Use this to test your knowledge and recall of all the main features of this topic. This will also be made available to you on Show My Homework.

A copy of each of the sources you will be assessed on will be made available for you to analyse from home. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to spend time on gaining a full understanding of each of the sources.

Art - drawing assessment

What you should revise

The assessment will be a standardised drawing of brushes in a paint pot with cellotape. This will assess: shape, composition form and tone. Students can prepare for this by drawing still life objects which have strong ellipse shapes such as coke cans and tins.

Leading a small cohort in three phase warm up. Performs one event with good level of technique and performance, or performs two events with moderate levels of technique and performance.


  • Batting: uses correct technique in defensive and attacking shots
  • Bowling: uses correct technique in bowling action, with appropriate control of line and length
  • Fielding: able to anticipate and adjust position according to pace of ball. Shows consistent catching ability and accurate return to wicketkeeper.


  • Stance and guard: base aided by rear foot being off-set and feet pointing in the same and correct direction
  • Footwork: able to attack and retreat maintaining balanced base and guard
  • Attack: able to use the lead hand to attack and defend
  • Defence: able to defend using arms, trunk and feet on the move.

Food Technology - food, nutrition and the catering industry

What should you revise?

For your assessment you will be required to complete an exam paper on the topics so far covered this year. You should therefore prepare to answer questions cantered around healthy eating and nutrition, food groups, the catering industry and different catering establishments.

How you should revise

You will be given the opportunity to participate in a revision lesson where such topics will be recapped upon. Independently revise the topics listed, focusing on the areas of weakness which will be outlined by your class teacher.
