Sociology - A Level

What will I study and learn?

A level Sociology has been designed to provide candidates with an introduction to Sociology. It emphasises social processes and social changes whilst also encouraging an ethos of critical enquiry, encouraging students to explore the social world and to reflect on their own social experiences. The content has been designed to inspire, nurture and develop learners. Throughout this one year course, learners will:

  • Recognise that their sociological knowledge, understanding and skills help them to develop an understanding of the relations between individuals, groups, institutions and societies
  • Analyse information
  • Organise and communicate their knowledge in creative ways
  • Understand and evaluate sociological methodology, through active involvement
  • Develop a lifelong interest in social issues.

How is the course assessed?

A level

  • Unit 1: Introducing socialisation, culture and identity (1 hour and 30 minutes examination) 30% of A Level
  • Unit 2: Research methods and researching social inequalities (2 hour and 15 minutes examination) 17 35% of A Level
  • Unit 3: Globalisation and the digital social world (2 hour and 15 minutes examination) 17 35% of A Level
