The 2013/14 academic year was a busy and successful sporting year for the school, our pupils, staff and alumni. Here we look back at some of our highlights in our latest 'end of year score card!'
Footballing awards and accolades
In September our Year 8 footballers headed to London to play in the world final of the Danone Nations Cup, they were representing England in the tournament. Our boys finished ninth out of 32 competing countries and Bobby Duncan picked up the title of 'Scorer of the Competition.'
Our Year 8 footballers won the inaugural Hillsborough Memorial Cup beating SFX 3-1 at the Walton Soccer Centre on Friday 28 March. They also won the U13 Liverpool and Merseyside Cups and were runners up in the U13 National Cup.
Our Year 10 footballers won the Merseyside shield and clinched the ESFA U15 National Cup in a thrilling 4-2 win over St Columba's School at Hillsborough in May.
Four of our Year 10 footballers were also selected to play for the Liverpool Boys side this academic year - M Hall, K Cringle, N Lucy and N Walsh. The team went on to win the National Cup and Kevin Cringle picked up a sixth medal in the final which is a feat never previously achieved!
Our sixth form footballers won the U19 Merseyside Schools and College League and Cup and also the Merseyside Shield. The team played 23 matches in 2013/14 winning 22, scoring an impressive 88 goals against 24.
Sixth former Alex Greenwood, who studies NVQ Fitness with us, plays for Everton Ladies and has made regular appearances for the Women's U19 England football team this year.
Awards and accreditations
Ten A Level PE students achieved their boxing leader awards this year which will help us to drive the sport forward, it is fast becoming one of our specialties.
Athletics and other sports
- In May Year 9 pupil Steven Jones continued his excellent athletics performance by breaking another school record in the high jump (1.79m). In June he broke the Liverpool Harriers and the Youth Development League record by jumping 1.87m. making him the number one U14 high jumper in the country!
- Year 10 pupil Tom Rogerson ran the 1500m in 4m 19.6 secs in May breaking another longstanding athletics record, in June he became city champ at the Liverpool City Athletics Championships.
- Year 8 student Matthew Duffy came first in the 100m race at the Liverpool City Athletics Championships at Wavertree Athletics Centre in June.
- The Year 8 relay team set a new school record and won at the Liverpool City Athletics Championships in June.
- Year 7 student Adam Standley was discus champion at the same event with a fantastic throw of 19.25m.
Other milestones of note
In June sixth form swimmer Luke Nisted represented Team GB in the European Deaf Swimming Championship in Saransk, Russia. He has competed in various local, regional and national competitions throughout 2013/14 with much success.
In March our sixth form rugby team won the Merseyside 7s rugby tournament in Southport, they played four matches in one day drawing one and winning three including their final against a strong team from Cowley in St Helens which has a fierce reputation in the game.
Our NVQ fitness students walked, ran and cycled 250 miles in one afternoon in aid of Sport Relief. They also lifted a combined 23 tonnes in weight in the school gym!
In June our Year 8 squad topped the Rugby Development League table with a powerful 30-5 win over an experienced team from the Lord Derby Academy.
Two NVQ Fitness students have taken up jobs with us this summer after completing their studies and successfully applying to work in our on-site Lifestyles gym. Congratulations Shaun Williams and Declan Donoghue.
Ms Johnson from our PE department continues to play for Everton Ladies FC and featured in the FA cup final against Arsenal Ladies at Wembley.
Dozens of our super staff have taken part in a number of events including the Great North Run, Tough Mudder and the Ironman Challenge in 2013/14 to raise funds for lots of charities and good causes. Over 20 staff completed the 10K Tunnel Run in Liverpool in June.
Cardinal Heenan's community officer Mr Collin is an International Assistant Referee and he was a regular on the side lines of premiership matches throughout the 2013/ 14 season (including the FA cup final at Wembley)!
Two of our former students scooped accolades at the Everton FC end of season awards in May - Tyias Browning was named U21s player of the season while Nikita Parris was named ladies player of 2014.
Steven Gerrard captained the England squad in the Brazil 2014 World Cup.
Boxer David Price won three Heavyweight bouts in 2014 in Denmark and Germany. He's currently ranked No.10 by the World Boxing Organization.
Michael 'Rocky' Fielding is the current reigning Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Boxing Champion.
Jack O'Connell is signed to Blackburn Rovers however he has spent much of this season playing on loan for Rochdale FC. Jack regularly captained the side and his performance saw him named League Two defender of the season by Sky Sports' FL72 show.
David Nugent signed for Leicester City in February 2011 and on 22 February 2014 he scored his 50th league goal for Leicester City against Ipswich Town. David has also played for Portsmouth, Burnley and Preston North End.
