Football in India
Following the fantastic success of of our football teams in winning back-to-back national titles, our boys were invited to New Delhi, India, to take part in one of the biggest school football tournaments in the world.
The invitation to represent England at the Subroto Cup, came from Air commodore Ashak Lal of the Indian Airforce, who organised this global event. We could appreciate that this was an amazing opportunity for the youngsters involved and a wonderful reward for the team, whose achievements were a direct result of their commitment, dedication and desire to succeed. They all demonstrated incredible professionalism in their approach to training and competition.
The scale of the tournament was reflected in the media attention it attracted. National newspapers, including The Times, documented their success in the competition and a number of the boys and the coach took part in televised interviews.
During the trip, students had the privilege to visit Mother Theresa's orphanage, Taj Mahal and Aggra Forte. Aside from being great fun, it was also very educational and really opened the students minds to how other people live. They were able to sample authentic cuisine and develop an understanding of the culture of India.
This was a life changing trip and once again Cardinal Heenan students conducted themselves with integrity and impeccable manners and were complimented by event organisers and hotel staff.
They were a credit to the school and their country as they competed against students three years older than themselves, in temperatures in excess of 45 degrees!
