Outstanding Week for Year 9 Football Team
It has been a fantastic week for our Year 9 football team as they secured two impressive victories to win the Liverpool Cup and to gain a place in the National Cup final.
On Tuesday the team took part in a fiercely contested game against St Francis Xavier's College in the final of the Liverpool Cup. The competition between Cardinal Heenan and SFX is one of the biggest rivalries in local football and the attitude and effort from all our boys was immense.
Despite going a goal down early on in the game, our boys stuck to their game plan and staged a superb fightback. Wonder goals from Ronan McCall, who scored a hat-trick, as well as tremendous efforts from Sonnie Hilton and Luca Connell saw the boys win the game in style with a 5-1 victory.
The boys were wonderful ambassadors for our school, wearing the shirt and badge with pride, but their efforts didn't end there. Just two days later they travelled to Telford to compete against Thomas Telford School in the semi-final of the ESFA Boys Under 14 Playstation Schools' Cup, in a game which was full of excitement from beginning to end.
Once again, this was a match against a very good team and the boys were faced with the added pressure of a very partisan crowd cheering on Telford. Right from the start, our team played at great pace with Sonnie Hilton putting us into the lead with an unstoppable shot after just ten minutes. Great goals from Ronan McCall and Luca Connell, either side of a Telford effort, saw the boys go into the half time break full of confidence with a 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately, the second half started with Ellis Jones getting sent off after two minutes and Telford scoring from the resulting free-kick. They used the advantage in numbers to press ahead and scored from two penalties to level the scores. Then, with ten minutes remaining, they fired in another goal to take a 4-3 lead.
Despite fatigue beginning to set in, Year 9 did themselves proud by getting stuck in and taking the game to Telford. Some great team play saw Sonnie Hilton score his second goal and level the scores once more.
Celebrations were short-lived as Telford went 5-4 up just two minutes later but, not to be outdone, our boys kept battling and scored a cracking equaliser when Ronan McCall took a free-kick that Dean Taylor rose to head home at the far post.
The game then went to extra-time when, midway through the first half, Ronan made a fantastic run through midfield before squaring the ball to Sonnie who scored into an empty net for his hat trick and a 6-5 lead.
Our boys then defended that lead right through to the end of extra-time to seal victory and gain a place in the final against Barnfield West Academy from Luton.
Mr Forgie would like to thank all of the players for their outstanding efforts in two incredible performances in one week.
Well done Year 9!

MRS. LYONS: You do know what they say about twins, secretly parted, don’t you?
MRS. JOHNSTONE: What? What?
MRS. LYONS: They say…they say that if either twin learns that he once was a pair, that they shall both immediately die. It means, Mrs. Johnstone, that these brothers shall grow up, unaware of the other’s existence. They shall be raised apart and never, ever told what was once the truth. You won’t tell anyone about this, Mrs. Johnstone, because if you do, you will kill them."
"Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people."
