Our new school building is equipped with excellent teaching rooms and resources for the study of all science disciplines.
A qualification in science will be beneficial to anyone looking to pursue a career in engineering, nursing, medicine and pharmacy.
In November 2013 a group of sixth form science students visited Chester Zoo to meet some people who have turned an interest in science into an exciting career.
Key Stage 3
Students follow the national curriculum.
Key Stage 4
Core and additional science are two separate GCSE qualifications examined at the end of year 11. Students will sit a paper in biology, chemistry and physics (worth 25% each); the rest of their mark will be made up of coursework (25%). We also offer the triple award in science for those with a strong interest in studying the subject in sixth form.
Key Stage 5
We offer four qualifications at this level, AS/A2 Levels in applied science, biology, chemistry and physics:
Students following the applied science course will learn about sports science, healthy bodies, energy transfer systems and substance research. It helps students to understand how important science is to the world around us, demonstrating that scientists do not have to wear white coats and sit sterile laboratories. Assessment is by portfolio and final exam.
Our biology course covers living organisms, diseases, the environment and scientific research methods. Students will have the opportunity to take part in numerous practical experiments. Assessment is via an exam and a demonstration of practical skills.
Our chemistry course covers areas such as atomic structures, the application of organic substances, extraction of metals kinetics and organic/ inorganic chemistry. Assessment is via examinations and demonstration of practical skills and understanding.
The physics course is taught via a mixture of practical and theory based approaches and students will cover areas such as particles, electricity and waves. Assessment is via an exam and a demonstration of practical skills.
